My trip to the National Portrait Gallery and the “Struggle for Justice” exhibition provided a number of key insights on how to lay an exhibit out and what exactly to feature. Though my exhibit will be entirely different in terms of content, I can use many of the same techniques as the curators at the National Portrait Gallery to organize and frame my work. Just as the “Struggle for Justice” was laid out roughly chronologically, my exhibit on the history of judicial dueling would benefit from a chronological presentation as well. I could start from the beginning, laying out the legal framework of judicial dueling and how it was used at the start of the practice. I could further elaborate on the evolution of the duel throughout the centuries, and how it became a solidified legal and cultural practice while interspersing various examples of judicial duels throughout. I could then transition into explaining the end of the judicial duel, and its abolition as a form of legal adjudication. I was also inspired by the diversity of mediums displayed by the National Portrait Gallery. Artifacts, paintings, photos, and sculptures all made and appearance in the exhibition, and I similarly plan to include a wide variety of visuals in my exhibit.
